My Thoughts on the Readings: LJ3

I read through Beth Saxton's article pertaining to blogs, RSS feeds, and Wikis. My first impression of this article is how terribly wrong I have been interchanging all these terms with each other. While the regular individual may be using these terms interchangeably they all are different and serve their own purpose.

I learned that Reddit is an RSS Feed. I am a big user of Reddit and often spend time daily scrolling through their subreddits. I'd like to point out that I believe RSS Feeds are the future, in comparison to wikis and blogs. RSS introduces convenience to the reader. Everything you could want to know is apart of that one aggregator. Look at Reddit for example, you can visit one of the numerous subreddits regarding cooking and tranistion to a subreddit that only has members who perform tomato gardening. The convenience is what makes it enticing and if there is any new technology that becomes successful it always involves convenience. Naturally, because us humans are comfortable and lazy.

All three of these (blogs, RSS, and Wikis) are used daily in our lives. I browsed through the Feeder article laying out the multitude of RSS sites available. I noticed there are tons of new outlets now who utilize RSS. Gone are the days of reading through a paper. If there is breaking news lets send it to a RSS and notify the reader with push notifications. It is instant, it is convenient, it is the future, and it is here.

My social media use has stemmed from utilizing RSS feeds, and I had no idea that is what they were called. From surfing Reddit, scrolling Fox News. My social media use is limited as is, however, RSS Feeds are a large portion of what I consume. Perhaps I will change how I use these for professional development as LinkedIn is a platform I am active on. Saxton mentions in her last paragraph that for professional development and growth the opportunities are ever-changing from document sharing to online conference calling and now RSS Feeds. It is all in the palm of our hands and for the taking.

  2. Hi Jarred,
I also enjoy scrolling on reddit. My favorite use of it is episode recaps. There are many subreddits that are dedicated o shows where you are able to have live discussions with others about the episode. I really didn't pay attention to how time I spent on RSS feeds until these readings. This is all so interesting! Great post.

  4. Hey Jarred,
I also definitely didn't realize Reddit was an RSS. I use Reddit, but not very often. I tend to use it more when I get an interesting notification that one of the subreddits I follow had something interesting posted. My own use of reddit is what made it being an RSS make so much more sense.
